Sustainability

This year, we are taking a series of practical steps to proactively reduce the environmental impacts of the POC 2018 while capitalizing on the event to gather support for a social cause.

Our measures include:

a. Selecting a green and ISO 14001-certified venue
  • Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur is certified with ISO 14001, an international standard of environmental management intended to assist organisations to achieve environmental goals
  • The hotel was a recipient of the 2016 - 2018 ASEAN Green Hotel Award

b. Reducing use of paper and relying instead on electronic communications
  • Timely upload of all presentations onto the POC2018 website for delegates’ access and reference
  • Delegates will be able to use a mobile app to post their questions during Question & Answer sessions
  • Delegates are encouraged to submit their feedback electronically post event

c. Minimising use of plastics by providing reusable water bottles
  • Delegates are encouraged to utilise their ‘personal water bottle’ provided in an eco-friendly conference bag
  • Water dispensers will be provided throughout the function space

d. Using locally sourced ingredients in our catering
  • Special menus will be developed to give priority to local produce in all the meals served during the POC2018

e. Selecting sustainable materials for event collaterals
  • Use of eco-friendly bags as event collaterals for our delegates

f. Others
  • Room temperature throughout the function space will be maintained at 24 - 25 degree Celsius without compromising on comfort (note: every degree increase in temperature may help reduce the energy costs by up to 10%!)
  • The hotel’s housekeeping personnel will also be closing the room curtains and setting the thermostat at 24 degree Celsius to conserve energy unless instructed to do otherwise
  • Delegates are encouraged to return their name badges and lanyards at the end of the event, to be reused

Wildlife Conservation Fund

In addition to the above, we are leveraging this event to drum up support for wildlife conservation efforts in Malaysia. Our programme will include recreational activities and entertainment during the Reception and Dinner, respectively, to raise funds, with all contributions channeled to the Malaysian Palm Oil Wildlife Conservation Fund (MPOWCF), a fund administered by the Malaysian Palm Oil Council.

The MPOWCF aims to:
  • Portray the good image of Malaysian palm oil by providing concrete assurances that its cultivation does not cause deforestation or loss of wildlife and their habitat through a focused conservation research program to be undertaken by experts from the academia, government agencies and NGOs
  • Provide funds for studies on wildlife, biodiversity and environmental conservation while factoring the overall impact of the palm oil industry on these parameters.

Sustainability themed recreational and entertainment events include the following:

a. POC2018 Welcome Cocktail Reception
  • Themed “World Cup Fever”, delegates can participate and win prizes by netting the football
  • With a contribution of RM 50, you have 5 tries to score a goal

b. POC2018 Gala Dinner
  • The Welcome performance comprises an artist completing an attractive painting within 5 minutes
  • This painting will be auctioned during the same evening
